I have been blessed to be pastor of First Baptist Church since June of 2014. Prior to serving in Lithonia, my wife and I were church planters in Western Pennsylvania. I received my Graduate of Theology degree from the Liberty Bible Institute and both a Bachelor of Arts in Biblical studies and a Master of Divinity from Luther Rice Seminary. I am so thankful to have my wife Barbara by my side as we serve the Lord together. We have been blessed with four grown children: Jim, Jake/Robin, Jona, and Joe/Christa. The joy of our lives is our nine grandchildren!

My hobbies include camping, hiking, reading a good book, an occasional round of golf, home projects and spending time with the family. I am so grateful that the Lord called me out of darkness, set my feet on solid ground, and continues to give me opportunities to work His fields.

I have been a member of First Baptist Church of Lithonia since 1956, and have worked in the church office since 1983 (part-time for three years and full-time since March, 1986). Every job I had prior to 1983 prepared me for the many various tasks associated with serving and working in the church office. In 1983 I wanted to go in one direction for employment, but God had His plans for me. I cannot imagine working anywhere else than where I am now.

When I am not at the church working or participating in various events, I enjoy reading, mostly mysteries and Christian fiction. Yard work is appealing only in cool weather. I love cats, the ocean, and lighthouses. My immediate family consists of my 98-year old mother, a son, daughter-in-law, and two grandchildren The church family at FBC makes up the rest.

Read Our History

First Baptist Lithonia has a very rich and dynamic history, but we are even more excited about the glorious future that lies ahead. Let us all work together to help push back the darkness and make that splendid future a powerful reality.

  • More

Members of Macedonia Baptist Church conceived the idea of a Baptist church in Lithonia. As a result of this prayerful conversation a public meeting was held in the Lithonia School on December 31, 1847 with a view of constituting a Baptist church. The church was constituted on February 18, 1848. There have been four buildings to house the congregation known for years as the Lithonia Baptist Church.

    • Lithonia School, a one room log house with a dirt floor – first building
    • Second was a frame building on the present First United Methodist site
    • The third was constructed in 1861 on the corner of Stone Mountain and Main Streets
    • The fourth site, a beautiful Sanctuary and Fellowship Hall building facing the I-20 expressway on Hillandale Drive was constructed in 1964-1965 and moved into on April 1966.

The History Room is located in the downstairs which houses some unique artifacts as well as pictures of all the former pastors as well as our present pastor. Some of the artifacts include:

    • A Bible presented by John M. Phillips in 1882 to the church
    • A Bible presented to the church by the Sunshine Class in November of 1925
    • Stained glass window that came from the building downtown
    • Sports trophies from the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s
    • Old platform chairs that match our Lord’s Supper Table and Podium
    • An organ and a couple of pews from the past

We are very thankful for our rich history, which is impossible to condense in just a few paragraphs. We hope when you visit, you will be able to enjoy our history displays that tell the rest of the story. We look forward to a glorious future and a great harvest of souls for the Kingdom of God. May God continue to expand the influence of First Baptist Church Lithonia for many more generations!
